March 3, 2025- Focus on the Fabulous

What a week!  Try to keep up!  This week, we celebrated our amazing staff with our annual staff appreciation week! Monday, we got in the Mardi Gras mood, and staff picked up their swag in the library.  Mrs. Hintz did a great job setting the library up to look like New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

Staff picked up hats, beads, and other fun swag! Throughout the week, the staff was treated to specialty coffee, fried pies, rolled ice cream, and tacos!

On top of that, our staff had the chance to indulge in pampering services such as massages, facials, haircuts, chiropractor services, manicures, acudetox, and more.

Thanks to our amazing R & R team for organizing a special week to celebrate and appreciate our fabulous staff!

Haskin Kindergarten students celebrated 100 days of school.  My, have they aged since the beginning of the school year!  Our students and staff have successfully made it through the first part of the school year- 100 out of 178 days- over half of the way there!

It was an exciting week of basketball as both of our teams competed in the district playoffs.  Both the Lady Vikings and the boy’s team defeated their competitors on Tuesday night.  The boys fought hard against Sangre de Cristo and came out with the win, and the Lady Vikings defeated South Park in a low-scoring game.  The girls took a hard loss against Sargent on Thursday but rebounded with an impressive win over Del Norte on Friday to take 3rd place in the district competition.  Way to go, ladies!  They have qualified to compete in regionals once again this year, and will be traveling to Hoenhe to play Dayspring Christian.

I was so impressed with our boys on Thursday night as they battled valiantly against Sierra Grande.  They were up by one at the half and kept the game exciting and close until the bitter end.  On Saturday, the boys went up against Crested Butte, a tough team they had defeated earlier in the season.  The boys ultimately took 4th place in the competition.  We are proud of their hard work, character, and determination.  The boys have qualified to compete at the regional level and will be playing Byers on Friday.

We wish both our teams good luck!  We are proud of their successful seasons this year!

District Ownership Plan at Work

Priority #1- Curriculum and Instruction:  CCSD staff lead rigorous, engaging, collaborative learning experiences in every classroom that are aligned with CCSD Instructional Expectations.

Students in Ms. Archuleta’s and Mr. Robert’s science classes had the chance to participate in engineering days at the college.

At ASU Mechanical Engineering Days the students were introduced to the ASU/CSU Mechanical Engineering Department. Students were able to throttle up a jet engine to around 80,000 RMP, engineer a lego car to be the slowest without stopping on a ramp, and create a marble course to keep a marble moving the longest amount of time. Center students were very competitive in these activities with thinking outside the box!

We had students compete at the regional Science Fair this weekend and a number of our students earned recognition.  Ms. Archuleta worked hard to help all of our students complete projects and compete at this level. She was especially proud of our Haskin students who started and completed projects.  Participants included:  CHS:  Westlea Tipsword and Eva Trujillo;  SMS:  Eljah Garcia and Issac Garcia;  Haskin:   Kaithlyn Almeida, Ryker Bouet, Tate Gylling, Jesus Moreno, Ashlynn Rodriguez, Ximena Sanches, Jeziel Torres, Daniel Valenzuela, Concetta Vigil

Awards for 2025 SLV Regional Science Fair:

Westlea Tipsword:  Lucero Family Foundation Award:  Biomedical Award, SLV Veterinary Association Award, 1st place- Zoology, Paper Award- Honorable Mention, Colorado Science and Engineering Fair Award- which will allow him to compete at the State level in April.

Concetta Vigil:  2nd place Chemistry

Tate Gylling:  Honorable Mention- Engineering

Ryker Bouet, Jeziel Torres, Daniel Valenzuela:  Novice Newton Award

Jesus Moreno:  Pioneers of Science Award

Priority #2 Post-Secondary and Workforce Readiness (PWR):  CCSD seeks to develop hard working learners that are contributors, problem solvers, effective communicators, future ready and empowered with the skills necessary to meet and handle the challenges they will face in today’s world.

On Thursday, Center students took part in a hands-on Career Day as part of their ICAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan) day. Each secondary student was assigned a job and a monthly salary, and from there, they were tasked with making important life decisions based on the information they were given, including their family status.

Students had to navigate choices about what type of housing they could afford, what kind of car to drive, and how to balance their wants versus needs. This real-world exercise provided a valuable opportunity for students to learn the financial and practical aspects of adult life, helping them develop essential skills and a better understanding of what it takes to manage life after school. It was a fantastic way to prepare them for the future!

Priority #3- Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS):  CCSD will maintain high expectations for student learning and behavior.  Structures are in place to support academic and behavioral needs of all students.

District staff met on Thursday to discuss students during Response to Intervention Meetings (RTI). Staff focused on specific student needs and designed strategic approaches to support students and help them be successful, both academically and behaviorally. This is a direct reflection of Core Belief #2- With our support, ALL students can be successful and achieve at high levels.

Our CLD team works hard to ensure our Multilingual students get the direct instruction and support they need to succeed academically in the classroom. Thanks to Alex Magness and her work at the elementary level to make that happen, as well as the work she did to successfully get through another year of ACCESS testing.

Haskin Elementary staff dug into writing assessment data during the PLC on Thursday. As a district, staff are focusing on supporting literacy in all classes. This intentional work will help teachers identify students who may need additional writing support and identify areas of strength.

Priority #4- Recruitment and Retention:

CCSD is committed to attracting the best and brightest to teach our students.  Our goal is to recruit, train, and retain highly qualified teachers.  Effective educators are the single most important school-based factor in determining student success.

It was a great week of appreciating our amazing staff throughout our annual staff appreciation.  On top of all those activities, Lindsay Stillwagon and Juliann Quintana, represented our district at the Colorado Educator and Recruitment Fair in Littleton this weekend.
