Focus on the Fabulous

Winter Fest Week was a blast! Students and staff showed off their Viking spirit with themed dress-up days, bringing energy and excitement throughout the week. We held a lively Pep Assembly on Thursday, recognizing all our winter sports teams.

The cheerleaders pumped up the crowd, and the day ended with an exciting staff vs. student basketball game. It was a nail-biter, but the students came out on top this year!

As always, a huge shout out to Hanna Hays for coordinating all the fun events for our students and staff!

Friday night, we hosted the 2nd annual Steve Martinez Memorial Basketball Game, and the gym was packed with fans honoring Steve’s legacy.

We were happy to have Karen Martinez celebrating the evening with us!

Spectators proudly wore their special t-shirts and Hawaiian gear, while the R&R team added to the festive atmosphere, handing out leis, sunglasses, and tropical drinks in coconut cups. Both JV teams secured wins, but despite hard-fought efforts, our varsity teams fell short.

Our Viking wrestlers had an outstanding performance at regionals in Walsenburg, finishing 2nd as a team!

Derriq Thompson – 4th place

Michal Archuleta – 1st place

Andree Meraz- 1st place

Aaron Valadez – 1st place

Caden Ruggles – 1st place

An impressive six Viking wrestlers have qualified for the State Championships! Additionally, Giselle Meraz, who represents Center while competing on a girls' team in another district, took 1st place in Canon City and has also qualified for state! Congratulations to all our wrestlers on their incredible achievements!

We had a strong showing at the Regional Spelling Bee at Adams State, with eight of our students qualifying to compete at that level. Their hard work and dedication were on full display—great job to all participants!

District Ownership Plan at Work

The District Ownership Team (DOT) has established long and short-term goals for each of our improvement strategies. 

Priority #4- Recruitment and Retention: 

CCSD is committed to attracting the best and brightest to teach our students.  Our goal is to recruit, train, and retain highly qualified teachers.  Effective educators are the single most important school based factor determining student success. 

Core Belief #4- Everyone must be committed to excellence in ALL they do, every day. 

The R & R team helped host Hawaiian Night for our final home basketball game of the season.  This is part of the team's efforts to build community and a sense of belonging for staff.  Thanks to Maria and Panta Villagomez, JoAnn Lopez, and Wendy Murillo for helping hand out Hawaiian goodies to students and the community.
