Focus on the Fabulous
There were tricks and treats as Center students and staff celebrated a Spook-tacular Halloween week. Haskin Elementary hosted its annual parade, followed by fun classroom festivities.
Our Key Club got out into the community and did Trick-or-Treating for those who are less fortunate. This is an annual event that is organized by Ms. Archuleta to support UNICEF. This organization works in some of the world’s toughest places to reach the most disadvantaged children and adolescents. Way to go to our Viking Key Club team for doing your part to make the world a better place through service.
Congratulations to our Center Viking Football team on closing their season with a victory! CHS defeated Trinidad on Friday, finishing with an impressive score of 41-24. We are proud of our players and coaches for their hard work, determination, and true #VikingStrong spirit throughout the season.
District Ownership Plan at Work
The District Ownership Team (DOT) has established long-term and short-term goals for each of our improvement strategies.
Priority #1- Curriculum and Instruction: CCSD staff lead rigorous, engaging, collaborative learning experiences in every classroom that are aligned with CCSD Instructional Expectations.
Our Curriculum and Instruction team has set ambitious annual goals focused on enhancing evidence-based instructional practices. One primary goal is to have 60% of our teaching staff demonstrate level three practices on the RANDA evaluation tool. This includes consistently implementing the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model (GRRM) or the Workshop Model in every lesson. Additionally, we aim to monitor and assess instructional quality across the district using walkthrough data that aligns with our instructional expectations.
As of last week, our administration team has collectively completed 118 classroom observations and provided feedback on 66 lesson plans. The data shows that GRRM is utilized in over 70% of observed lessons. While the Workshop Model is not as frequently implemented, between these two approaches, our district’s instructional framework is being followed in 84% of classrooms. You can view the collective data in the accompanying chart.
Priority #2—Post-Secondary and Workforce Readiness (PWR): CCSD seeks to develop hardworking learners who are contributors, problem solvers, effective communicators, future-ready, and empowered with the skills necessary to meet and handle the challenges they will face in today’s world.
Ms. Archuleta and Mr. Roberts, CHS science teachers, recently took high school students to the ASU Discover Mechanical Engineering Days. This experience supports one of our Postsecondary Workforce Readiness (PWR) goals: ensuring students are exposed to diverse career paths and post-secondary opportunities. At the event, students gained insights into careers in mechanical engineering, including the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the field. We are grateful to our teachers for creating these valuable learning experiences and broadening students' perspectives on future career options.
Priority #3- Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS): CCSD will maintain high expectations for student learning and behavior. Structures are in place to support academic and behavioral needs of all students.
We are fortunate to have Misty Lambert and Michele Hammel leading our district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Michele serves as the MTSS Coordinator for Haskin, while Misty oversees MTSS at the middle and high school levels. MTSS is a prevention-focused framework that uses team-driven, data-based problem-solving to enhance outcomes for every student. This multi-faceted approach includes family, school, and community partnerships, a layered continuum of support, data-driven problem-solving, and evidence-based practices. Their work aligns with Core Belief #2: With our support, all children can succeed at high levels. The MTSS team works diligently to ensure each student receives academic, social, and behavioral support tailored to their needs.
Under Misty and Michele’s leadership, the Response to Intervention (RTI) process provides resources and structures for students across all levels. This process involves identifying areas of concern, collecting data, implementing interventions, and monitoring their effectiveness. Misty and Michele are also active members of the District Ownership Team (DOT), collaborating on strategies to support student success. They share the work of the MLT, and we make sure that building work aligns with district efforts.
One of our MTSS goals focuses on improving student behavior. With the help of the Multi-Level Team (MLT), we track data on behavior, attendance, tardiness, missed assignments (ZAPs), and failed courses. The DOT reviews quarterly reports, aiming to reduce inappropriate student behaviors and increase intervention effectiveness by 5% each quarter for a total annual improvement of 20%. At the end of last year's first quarter, there were 198 discipline referrals, compared to 191 this year. Classroom incidents accounted for most referrals, with 39 administrative referrals. Tenth grade had the highest number of referrals, totaling 72. While our 5% reduction goal called for a decrease of ten incidents, we achieved a reduction of seven.
We are also tracking the distribution of Viking Bucks to reinforce positive student behaviors. By the end of October, Haskin staff awarded 37,322 points to students, Skoglund staff awarded 42,251 points, and CHS staff awarded 88,386 points. This collective effort is part of our District Ownership work, where everyone plays a role in fostering student success.
Priority #4- Recruitment and Retention:
CCSD is committed to attracting the best and brightest to teach our students. Our goal is to recruit, train, and retain highly qualified teachers. Effective educators are the single most important school-based factor in determining student success.
Mr. Lavier completed his training for the new evaluation requirements through CDE. Everyone should have completed their self-assessments and established their goals for this coming year. Administrators will review and approve goals before mid-year evaluations.
