Focus on the Fabulous
This week marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated annually from September 15th to October 15th. It began in 1968 under President Johnson and was expanded to a full month by President Reagan in 1988. The celebration recognizes Hispanic/Latino Americans' profound contributions to the U.S. The timing reflects the independence anniversaries of several Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15th, Mexico on September 16th, Chile on September 18th, and Belize on September 21st. Mike Martinez has created impressive display boards in the middle and high school hallways, highlighting the achievements and contributions of Hispanic/Latino Americans. This is an excellent opportunity to recognize their journeys and accomplishments in U.S. history.
Our students are engaged in learning at every level! This week, second graders participated in International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage, and collaboration inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot. Students explored the power of imagination and learned how a simple dot can significantly impact the world around them!
In Mrs. Archuleta’s class, students took a creative approach to learning biology by composing songs related to their presentations. What a fun and engaging way to incorporate multiple intelligences into the learning process!
It’s also really cool to see everybody embracing our Viking heritage! Mrs. Sisneros has adopted our Viking Voyage theme in her classroom, and students are earning Viking stickers for their ships
as positive reinforcement!
At last week's football game, Landry Neufeld was rocking a vintage Viking on her jean jacket! It’s great to see everybody getting on board the Viking ship! #VikingStrong!

We had another productive week in Center! On Wednesday, we held our first District Accountability Committee (DAC) meeting before the Board meeting. The DAC plays a vital role by advising the district on budget priorities, performance, evaluations, and other key areas. This committee is open to everyone, and we encourage family and community involvement as part of our goal to increase engagement. DAC meetings occur on the second Tuesday of each month at 4:15 pm in the Community Room. We welcome all interested individuals to attend!
On Friday, our staff demonstrated their dedication to our Core Beliefs during a Professional Development day coordinated by our Curriculum and Instruction leaders, Kevin Hagan and Ashley Lane. The day focused on thinking and high-leverage strategies for our multi-language learners, which aligned with our district ownership plan (DOP) and walkthrough data. This reinforces our commitment to quality planning, instruction, and assessment, as Core Belief #3 outlines. It was a day of intentional learning and collaboration, highlighting our commitment to excellence in everything we do.
Our Lady Vikings continue to impress! They faced a tough match against Buena Vista on Thursday, losing 3-1, but bounced back with victories against Cotopaxi on Friday and Rocky Ford on Saturday. Way to go, ladies! This week, they will travel to La Veta to play ECA and Sangre on Friday and Monte at home on Saturday.
